Loyal Activists? Party Socialization and Dissenting Voting Behavior in Parliament

The question of why members parliament (MPs) overwhelmingly toe the party line is receiving increasing scholarly attention. Adding to discipline-based approaches, loyalty, that is, a feeling allegiance not related policy agreement or disciplinary pressures, an important part explanation. In this article, we employ more nuanced view on loyalty than previous observational studies and conceptualize it as result socialization processes most politicians into structures their prior mandate. We test our argument quantitatively using data for whipped votes in German Bundestag (1949–2017). results support propositions MPs who didn't hold offices mandate have higher probability vote defection behavioral differences pre-parliamentary vanish longer serve parliament. Our work has implications research intraparty politics, legislative behavior, representation.
